Community Medicine is an academic subject, a branch of Medicine which deals with promotion of health and prevention of diseases, involving people's participation, utilizing professional management skills

Community Based Training

The department organizes the institutional flagship program Interdisciplinary Community Based Training Program (ID-CBTP). This program while upholding the social accountability of the institution towards the society, also provides an opportunity for an activity-based immersive learning experience for the undergraduate and postgraduate medical, dental, nursing, physiotherapy and pharmacy students.

Urban and Rural Health Centres

The department works closely with the public health system and caters to the health needs of over a lakh population in Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural and Chikkaballapura districts.

The rural field practice areas are Avathi PHC and Kaiwara PHC as the rural health training centre. The urban field practice areas are Mathikere UPHC and Netaji circle PHC areas. Interns undergo a 2 month internship program in both urban and rural setting, where they work under the medical officer of the centres and learn about implementation of National health programs. Interns learn the craft of medicine with the art of social understanding and gain the ability to provide primary healthcare with limited resources.

Swatch Bharat campaigns, ‘Green campus drives’

As part of the social outreach programmes, various awareness campaigns through rallies and street plays on pertinent issues like NCD-diabetes, cancer, hypertension, healthy life style, corruption, environment, awareness on breast-feeding are organised. The students participate in National helath programmes such as pulse polio programme, Mission Indradhanush ec, and also in eco-sustainability drives such as Swatch Bharat campaigns, ‘Green campus drives’, plastic free zones etc

The department provides comprehensive health care to 4 old age homes and also observes events of public health importance- World health, World TB, World Environment days and World Breastfeeding Week by organizing theme-based activities, talks, awareness programs and competitions among the students and general public.

Research

The Department has been involved in population based surveys, operational research, action research, community trials, evaluations and establishment of cohorts. The major thrust area of research by the department are: Non Communicable Diseases, Biomedical waste Management, Geriatrics, Tuberculosis, Maternal and child Health.

Department has implemented four ICMR funded research projects and has been implementing the UNIDO funded waste management project in 5 states in the country.

The department has carved a niche in health care waste management in international platform and has been involved in capacity building and establishment of sound management of medical waste not only in our institution but also in national and international level.

As an outcome of action research, a successful model of defloridation program was demonstrated in kaiwara by establishing reverse osmosis plant with community participation. Community based research project resulted in establishment of a Spandana School and resource centre for differently abled children in rural area.
