I am delighted to share with you all some updates and highlights from our Community Medicine Department at Ramaiah Medical College.

We at the Department of Community medicine are committed and dedicated to promoting community health and well-being through quality education, research, and service in line with the institutional objectives. Our department is known for its unity, team work and dedication in delivering education or quality health care services to the marginalised and underprivileged populations.

Our faculty members are highly qualified, experienced and dedicated to provide the best possible learning experience to our students. Apart from teaching medical undergraduates and postgraduates, the department offers training for other courses such as MPH, BPT, PharmD and PGDGM, CHCWM of IGNOU. The medical undergraduates are taught community medicine right from their first year till final year with three months’ internship training.

In addition to innovative teaching-learning programmes incorporated in CBME curriculum, the department provides field exposure to students through implementation of Community based training programme (CBTP) since 2004 which is now interdisciplinary (IDCBTP); and the Family Adoption Programme (2022).

Community based training programme (CBTP) is a flagship program of our institution designed to provide community based experiential learning. With unity in health as the concept, the programme is now being implemented as IDCBTP from 2017, first of its kind in the country where medical, nursing, dental, Physiotherapy and pharmacy students come together to learn mutually. Our students actively participate in various community outreach programs, health camps, and health education initiatives. These programs are instrumental in creating awareness about important health issues and promoting healthy behaviours among the community.

By virtue of training rigour, the Community medicine postgraduate program of Ramaiah Medical college which was started in 1993 has attracted students from far and wide. With three PG seats uptake per year, more than 80 postgraduates have completed the course till date and are well placed in various academic, research and administrative positions in the country.

The thrust research areas of our department include Biomedical waste management, Geriatrics, Epidemiology of Communicable and non-communicable diseases. Our research team has been actively engaged in conducting field based studies on various public health issues prevalent in the community and the faculty have led several research funded by various external agencies such as ICMR, RGUHS, WHO, UNIDO etc.

Department is known for its excellence in the area of Biomedical waste management in Research, Advocacy and consultation services. The department has been constantly engaged in conducting several capacity building workshops and strengthening waste management systems in health care facilities across India and other n south east Asian countries. We are proud to inform that our institution was awarded the training component of the UNIDO funded project which was implemented in 5 states in the country where series of trainings conducted and several training and IEC materials developed.

In addition, the department organises outreach camps and monthly health camps in 4 adopted old age home in urban area and Spandana school for mentally challenged children in rural area. As part of our commitment to social accountability, the institution provides free health services with free medication to these needy people and marginalised population.

Over the past year, we have achieved several significant milestones. We have also organized several workshops, seminars, and conferences to promote research and knowledge sharing among the faculty members and students. These events have been highly successful in bringing together experts from various fields of medicine and facilitating discussions on current and emerging issues in community health.

As we move forward, we remain committed to our mission of promoting community health and well-being through quality education, research, and service. We will continue to provide our students with the best possible learning experience and support our faculty members in their pursuit of excellence in research and education.
