Emergency Medicine (EM) is relatively a new specialty in medicine and is expanding at a phenomenal pace throughout the globe.

The government and national medical council have recognized the need to develop systems that respond to acute medical and surgical emergencies. India has entered the race in ensuring citizens have access to emergency care in defined emergency departments across the country. Emergency Medicine MD Program of Emergency Medicine Department (EMD) at the Ramaiah Medical College (RMC), one of the premier educational, clinical and research institutions in the Karnataka, India was among the first few medical colleges to introduce this world class emergency teaching and training program to meet the nation’s large demand as early as 2004, for these healthcare providers especially in this era where fear of complaints and litigations is enormous. The logistics of work, the shift pattern of work, environment in real-time dynamic uncontrolled situations, ensuring availability of teaching faculty 24/7, adhering to quality-controlled teaching and training is some of the biggest challenge we have overcome. With MCI approved MD Post Graduate Program in Emergency Medicine, RMC is geared up to train 4 Post Graduates per year to practice EM in the complex and challenging arena from PHCs to tertiary hospitals by learning in its unique Electronic Management Solutions integrated Networking Emergency Medical Services (EMS IN EMS) with a curriculum is adapted from best clinical centres and modified to the local requirement.

The Accident & Emergency services (AES) at our hospitals have well-equipped Triage, Resus bays, minor OT, emergency OT, Recovery room, post-operative ICU, Emergency IUC and observational units. to provide priority medical care for those people who are acutely ill, or having life or limb threatening problems 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year.

The content is exhaustive with focus of knowledge, skills, and professional attributes in areas of clinical relevance to our community requirement. Training will emphasize proficiency in resuscitation, assessment, initial management, emergency anesthesia techniques, pain management, emergency lifesaving surgical interventions, intensive care management, appropriate referral of patients, as well as responsibilities for organizational and administrative aspects of an EM across all age groups. The graduating resident will be able to practice independently within any emergency department across all levels of hospitals in India or abroad as well-trained emergency physicians.
