The Department was started by Professor D.Ramu in the year 1982 and he was instrumental in starting the medico legal work in our institute in the year 1991, Which was till then only under the purview of Government Doctors, with the sole intent of making use of the expertise available in private Medical Colleges, to the benefit of society, Medical students and police and thereby in the administration of justice and the baton has been carried on by Dr. Somashekhar and Dr. S Harish in the overall development of the department, museum and Post-graduation course in the year 2001 and till date 40 postgraduates have graduated and are doing extremely well at various Medical colleges across the country and Abroad.

We started with about 10 police stations under Yeswanthapur Division of Bangalore city, with about 350 cases per year. Currently we are attending to about 18 police stations and 12 traffic zones. National High ways and Yeswanthapur Railway police station and doing about 800 Post-mortem/ year.

We are happy and thankful to be provided with one of the best morturies in the country and with all modern amenities which was tested during Covid times. These facilities will go a long way in providing respect to the dead and relief to the relatives of the deceased and providing better working conditions for staff.

Our students have brought laurels by bagging RGUHS UG topper awards in Forensic Medicine 3 times in the last 5 years and also our Post graduate students have won best paper/ poster presentations in various conferences and also PG topper award in 2012, 2015 & 2022.

An e-module on Medico-legal cases was developed for Interns in 2018, to hone their knowledge on handling various medico-legal cases in their professional practice and is mandated for their completion of internship.

Forensic Medicine Department is a part of the Collaborative Child Response Unit (CCRU) to provide collaborative care in cases of child abuse and also works closely with the Department of Anatomy in the Voluntary Body donation programme.

Medico Legal Cell has been formed to give assistance/inputs and replies to notices from State Medical Council to our in-house doctor’s cases of negligence suits filed against them.

The department works closely with the Bangalore Police and Transport Departments, Government of Karnataka through dedicated workshops and awareness programmes on road safety, suicide prevention and drug abuse.
