The Department of General Medicine was established in 1981.
The department is well known for its strong academics, highly motivated and experienced faculty and rich clinical material which attracts the students from all over the country. The Department of Medicine is one of the largest departments of the college involved in teaching UG (150/year), PG (20/year), Dental, Physiotherapy, Allied health sciences. The department is attached to two hospitals which provide a variety of clinical cases for in-depth and immersive learning for post graduate students.
The department is involved in the care of critically ill patients who come from all over Karnataka and the neighbouring states as the ICUs are well equipped. The clinical activities of the department include running two hospitals daily which cater to about 600 patients visiting the hospital and managing 180 inpatient beds in general ward and 60 ICU patients daily.
There are speciality clinics like Cardiology, Neurology, Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Haematology, Infectious disease. Geriatric clinic is one of the highly specialized speciality clinic of the department which offers comprehensive geriatric assessment. The department conducts a Post-graduate diploma in Geriatric Medicine programme which was started in 2004.
Highlights
- Many of the faculty members are fellows/members of prestigious societies like Indian College of Physicians (ICP), Association of Physicians of India (API), National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), Royal College of Physicians (RCP), and Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER).
- Faculty from the Department of General Medicine have contributed chapters in various prestigious textbooks like Davidson's Principles and Practice of Medicine, IGNOU-PGDGM Course material, Current Update by API.
- Department has an active “Foreign students observership programme”, 80 students from Ghent University, Belgium, Groningen’s University Netherlands, International Malaysian School, Crimea Federal University, St. Louis University, Caribbean Island have participated in the programme.
- The department has a vibrant research ecosystem. The Department is actively involved in numerous collaborative research projects with prestigious institutions like IISc, DRDO, National Institute of Nutrition, BIRAC.
- Faculty from the Department of General Medicine have guided 25 UG students in their research projects in last 5 years. 5 students have got grants from ICMR and 3 students from RGUHS.
- In the last 5 years the faculty from the department have published 50 articles in various international and national indexed journals.
- The faculty members of the department were involved in designing, developing and validating of medical device (Female urinary cup) which has got a US patent.
- Post-graduate students of the department have won 20 awards in national and state conferences in the last 5 years.
- The department has always contributed to the health problems of community and had a pivotal role in managing COVID pandemic and has managed more than 10,000 patients which is the highest number among the private hospitals in the state of Karnataka. It had a dedicated 24X7 hotline number for COVID related issues, and a comprehensive “post COVID Clinic”.
- Many faculties have received awards for their work during COVID-19 pandemic, clinical care.
- The department has robust outreach and extension activities and has conducted over 300 camps in the last 5 years.
- The faculty are actively involved in giving public talks which are aired on various media platforms.
- The average pass percentage in the University examination is 95% in UG exams and 90% in PG exams. Some of the students have secured distinction and Rank in university examination.
