Department Overview :-
- Well-established department - started in 1985
- Catering comprehensive nephrology services to the society.
- Active renal transplantation program, including Live and Deceased donors.
- Alumni (11) are well-established as successful nephrologists.
- One of the largest hemodialysis center in the state, doing around 4000 dialysis per month.
- First Medical College Hospital to perform a kidney transplant in the state of Karnataka
- DM Nephrology residency program has been offered since 2011. Currently has an intake of 5 students/ year.
Highlights
- Dialysis unit has state-of-the-art Hemodialysis, Online HDF, and CRRT catering to around 140 patients daily.
- Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) and slow low-efficiency dialysis (SLED) is offered to selected hemodynamically unstable patients.
- Dialysis unit is one of the first few centers in the city to use single-use dialyzers and tubings, which is now the standard of care for all dialysis patients.
- Has an active chronic peritoneal dialysis program(CAPD).
- Kidney transplantation is being done regularly, encompassing both live-related – ABO compatible and ABO incompatible, transplants in high-risk groups- including HIV-positive and deceased donor transplantations.
- All nephrology procedures including Acute and Long term catheter placement, CAPD, AVF and Renal biopsy are regularly being offered
- The in-house hospital Authorization committee and Competent Authority for the kidney transplant program support department.

Nephrology as a medical specialty is evolving rapidly and is highly technology-driven. In this regard, we are fortunate to have the best infrastructure and equipment, like – world-class dialysis unit, which includes standard dialysis machines, online HDF and CRRT machines to name a few.
