Nephrology is a specialty of adult internal medicine and pediatric medicine that concerns the study of the kidneys, specifically normal kidney function and kidney disease ,preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication.
We are also catering to the needs of rural population and have established dialysis centres in Nelamangala, Devanahalli, Yelahanka and Kaiwara. Nephrology services (including OPD and IP services) are offered at these peripheral hospitals.
We are proud to say that we were the first Medical College Hospital to have done the renal transplantation in Karnataka. There is an active Live Related, ABO-Incompatible and Deceased Donor Renal Transplantation programme. We do on an average 30-50 renal transplants per year. We also have the expertise to do kidney transplants among HIV positive patients. Till date, we have done more than 500 transplants including 50 Deceased Donor transplants. Our 1 year and 5 year graft survival is on par with International standards.
Our transplant surgeons are well trained to perform complex transplant surgeries including simultaneous swap transplants, multiple vessel transplants. We have a well-equipped Transplant ICU to manage patients during the post-operative period.
Bangalore has scores of migrant labourers working in different sectors and commercial establishments. During the COVID lockdown in March 2020, many migrant labourers lost jobs and were forced to return back to their native towns. During such crisis period, our department took a voluntary decision and arranged for the distribution of food packets at Railway station and bus stands. Face shields and masks were distributed to the security guards and police officers.
