Neurosurgery or neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the surgical treatment of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system.

The Department of Neurosurgery offers services in various subspecialties of neurosurgery. Regularly we have Spine clinic on Monday & Friday, Movement disorder clinic & Epilepsy clinic on Wednesday, Stroke clinic on Thursday between 10 am to 1pm.

Stroke Clinic

Ramaiah Hospital offers treatment and educates patients on prevention of stroke. There are 2 types of stroke- Ischemic stroke due to a block in the blood vessel which supplies the brain and hemorrhagic stroke which occurs due to bleed in the brain. These acute illnesses need emergent treatment with either surgery or by endovascular neurosurgical procedures. A few patients can be monitored in the intensive care unit with medications. Such patients are followed up in the stroke clinic after emergent treatment for secondary prevention of stroke, patient education and titration of medications

Movement Disorder Clinic

Movement disorders are a group of diseases and syndromes that cause abnormal or involuntary movement. Movement disorders affect the ability to produce and control movements. The movements may be too weak, too forceful, too uncoordinated, or too poorly controlled for the task at hand. Ideal and selected patients with movement disorders are referred to a Neurosurgeon after evaluation by a neurologist if it seems that the movement disorder can be treated with surgery. For example, having Deep Brain Stimulation surgery can help some people with Parkinson Disease. Besides, various lesioning and ablation surgeries are also performed for movement disorders.

Epilepsy Clinic

The clinic in association with the Department of neurology offers a range of services outpatient evaluation, scalp EEG and long term video EEG. From these clinics, patients will be directed to the most advanced testing methods for the evaluation of epilepsy, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and video monitoring. For those patients who require more intensive testing or attention, the CoEE also provides inpatient units for examining certain seizure types more closely, changing medications in a monitored setting, and pre-surgical evaluation. Patients with drug-refractory epilepsy are further evaluated per protocol and surgery is offered after interdisciplinary team meetings. Patients who have undergone surgery are followed up in the OPD for evaluation of outcome and titration of medications.

Neuro-Spine Clinic

The neuro- spine centre brings together all the specialists involved in diagnosing and treating spinal conditions. Minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) implies smaller incision, less muscle dissection, preservation of spinal ligaments, less blood loss, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stay with better results as compared to open procedures. Patients with degenerative spine disease are evaluated at the neuro-spine clinic and offered treatment in the form of medications or surgery by a team of dedicated neurosurgeons specialized in minimally invasive spine surgery. Patients are also followed up post-operatively in the Neuro-spine clinic.

Trauma and Tumour Clinics

Patients with head and spine trauma require special care and follow-up after surgery. Various post-traumatic syndromes are addressed after evaluation in the trauma clinic including seizures, cognitive and motor deficits. Appropriate patients are directed to physiotherapy and rehabilitation at the Ramaiah Centre for Rehabilitation

Neuro- oncology which involves brain and spine tumours are evaluated in the outpatient clinic on a daily basis. Appropriate radiological investigations are asked for these patients on an out-patient basis in the clinic. Post-treatment follow-up is advised for patients who have undergone surgery which includes consultation with an oncologist for adjuvant therapy if needed.
