About Us
The department was started in the year 1981.The department of Ophthalmology at Ramaiah medical college hospital aims to go beyond regular eye care.
Our department provides a well-equipped facility for the complete examination, diagnosis and treatment (both medically and surgically) of cataract, glaucoma, strabismus and amblyopia, ocular trauma, refractive disorders, cornea and external diseases, lacrimal drainage disorders, uveal diseases, and retinal disorders.The expert team is comprised of a dedicated and well-qualified team of ophthalamic sub-specialities.The department handles all emergency cases round the clock and elective surgical procedures.
At our facility, we perform, phaco cataract surgery,C3R for keratoconus,glaucoma surgery,oculoplasty surgery, squint, paediatric ophthalmic medical and surgical care.At Advanced Learning Center (ALC), postgraduate students learn techniques of local anaesthesia ,suturing ,DCR on cadavers ,cataract steps goat’s eye ,retina examination on mannequins.
Postgraduate students are also taught extensively in OT manual small incision cataract surgery and other surgeries to be able to perform independently at the end of the course. The staff of Ophthalmology is actively involved in developing integrated ophthalmic care, catering to patients through various camps.

- MS: Intake 6 students per year.
- Small incision cataract surgery training certification programme for external ophthalmologists.
- Training for DPT(Physiotherapy) 40 students per year
- Advanced training centre programme for postgraduates conducted every week on Tuesdays and Undergraduates 6th term students- every batch has 3 sessions/ posting; 4th term students- every batch has 1 session/ posting.
- Ramaiah eye bank: Member of EBAI (since 2008). Aligning with the National Program for eye donation and keratoplasty.
- Camp surgeries under DBCS scheme for camp patients past last 18 years. conducts about 16 camps a month and we operate approximating up to 180 surgeries a month
