The Department of Pharmacology was established in 1979 to train undergraduate students. The postgraduate program (MD in Pharmacology) was started in 1998.
The department is involved in teaching basic principles of Pharmacology and therapeutics to undergraduate and post graduate students.
Pharmacology is the science that deals with the study of drugs. It provides scientific data, using which one can choose a drug treatment of proven efficacy and safety from the various options available to suit the patients. The knowledge of the molecular basis of drug action, administration of drugs, the adverse effects caused by medications, its prevention and treatment and the effects of administering two or more drugs to a patient will be learnt in the context of its clinical application.

- Department of Pharmacology, M S Ramaiah Medical College & Hospital has been identified as one of the ADR Monitoring Centre under Pharmacovigilance Programme of India and Medical Device Adverse Event Monitoring Centre under Materiovigilance Programme of India.
- The faculty of the department are active members making significant contribution to various institutional committees such as Ethics Committee, Scientific committee, Hospital infection control committee, Division of research and patents, Drugs and formulary committee, Jeeva raksha, Medical education unit and Pharmacovigilance committee.
- The Department trains undergraduates to become confident in prescribing drugs rationally to treat common ailments and monitor adverse drug reactions. Post graduates are trained in applied and fundamental research, drug development process, principles of pharmacology and recent advances. The department of Pharmacology has experienced faculty who are actively involved in innovative teaching learning activities encouraging students to learn by making models, posters and videos.
