The department of Plastic Surgery is a 30 year old department catering to the varied aspects of reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgical procedures.
The department consists of a group of eminent plastic surgeons who can deliver quality plastic surgical care. Over the years the department of plastic surgery at M S Ramaiah hospitals has become the preferred destination for patient seeking varied plastic surgical procedures.
The department is a well-known and most sought after centre for young surgeons who would like to pursue their specialization in plastic surgery, residents who get trained in plastic surgery would eventually appear for a qualified examination which would award them qualifying certification in plastic surgery. In addition the department conducts a number of workshops and CME programs in the latest advances in Plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries.
The department of Plastic Surgery at M S Ramaiah Medical College has the unique distinction of conducting Microvascular reconstructions for a wide variety of complex surgical defects ranging from Trauma to Ablative oncological surgeries. In addition the department also conducts a wide variety of complex hand repairs and reconstructions ranging from Reimplantation to toe transfers for finger reconstruction. The department also caters to a wide variety of fascio maxillary trauma reconstruction and varied asthetic surgical procedures in addition to the routine general plastic surgical work. The department also has the facility of providing services in the sub specialities of plastic surgery like cleft surgeries, burns, hand surgery, breast liposuction and diabetic foot.
In order to provide top notch Plastic and Reconstructive services the department has got an excellent infrastructure in the form of exclusive laminar operation theatres, well ventilated and designed outpatient rooms/ dressing and minor procedural areas , exclusive area dedicated to accident and emergency which catered to efficient timely management of plastic surgical emergencies during the golden hour, exclusive department library, well planned seminar halls with the modern audio visual aids.

- Diabetic foot clinic - Monday/ Wednesday/ Friday
Highlights
The department of Plastic Surgery at M S Ramaiah Medical College was started in the year 1989 with a honorary consultant. The department made a humble start catering to general plastic surgical procedures. In the year 1993 the department was enhanced by the addition of another full time faculty member. This facilitated the improvement of work and the number of cases. The addition of another faculty member in the year 1998 further enhanced the work force of the department.
With the increased workload in terms of numbers and quality the department was able to obtain certification by Medical Council of India to start the M.Ch course in Plastic Surgery in the year 2008. Initially the department was allotted 1 seat every year. Subsequently with the addition of 3 more full time faculty members the department progressed towards sub speciality work in plastic surgery. Microvascular surgery, fascio maxillary surgery , reconstructive surgery for ablative cancer surgeries, orthopaedic related plastic surgery and neuro surgery related reconstructive surgeries were added to the armamentarium of the existing workload. This facilitated the department in obtaining an increase of seats in M.Ch plastic surgery from 1 to 4 in the year 2020.
Quality Improvement Activities
- The department conducts international plastic surgical workshops of high quality in the advanced learning centre. Some of the workshops have been very unique and first of its kind in the country. This has helped many plastic surgeons to enhance their existing skills.
- The department conducts regular training sessions for post graduates in the advanced learning centre. This helps them to have a hands on experience of flap harvesting, micro vascular anastomosis and a wide variety of other plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures.
- The department also takes pride in training a number of foreign exchange students who have benefited immensely from their training from plastic surgery.

- The department has keen interest in surgical innovations and has teamed up with Engineering specialities for innovative work. This has resulted in filling of patents. Some of the projects have been take up by the industry and is in the final stage of certification, clinical trials and product commercialisation

We are a progressive and innovative team of Plastic Surgeons who participate in academic activities , surgical work , research and teaching. Our department believes in interactive and interdepartmental teaching. Plastic Surgery is a field which serves to solve the problems faced by other specialities and can also be considered as a problem solving speciality.
