Psychiatry deals with the delicate subject of understanding, preventing and treating mental, emotional and behavioural disorders.
The Department of Psychiatry is trained in Disaster Management, an aspect rare in most institutions.
Undergraduates come to this department for a one-month clinical posting. They mostly learn through observation and discussions.
At the PG level, students are required to undertake primary patient care, and look after both inpatients as well as outpatients. Much of their learning also comes from the fact that the department organises district mental healthcare centres and day care centres for patients. The department also allies with the World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation.

Department of Psychiatry is a multidisciplinary department consisting of Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists, Psychiatric Nurses and Psychiatric social workers. At present Psychiatry Department has out-patients clinics in Ramaiah Teaching Hospital and Ramaiah Memorial Hospital. It has a 30-bedded Inpatient set up in the Medical College Teaching Hospital.
