Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the urinary-tract system and the reproductive organs.
Urology combines the management of conditions, such as urinary-tract infections and benign prostatic hyperplasia, with the management of surgical conditions such as bladder or prostate cancer, kidney stones, congenital abnormalities, traumatic injury, and stress incontinence.
Kidney Transplant
Both living donor and cadaveric kidney transplants in association with department of Nephrology. Donor nephrectomy is routinely being done by laparoscopic technique. Shortly robotic kidney transplant program also will be initiated.
Dialysis access
AV fistula creation for hemodialysis and CAPD catheter insertion for peritoneal dialysis is being done for Chronic Kidney Disease patients who require regular dialysis.
ESWL
Latest Dornier Delta 3 machine is available for extracorporeal lithotripsy for renal stones. This is a non-invasive, out patient based procedure for patients with renal stones less than 2 cms in size and other favorable factors.
Endourology and Lasers
Holmium laser as well as Thulium YAG and Thulium fibre lasers are available for laser treatment of both renal and ureteric stones as well as treatment of benign prostate enlargement. Stones are being treated by minimally invasive techniques like PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy), mini PCNL, URS (ureterorenoscopy) and RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery). To this end, the department is endowed with latest scopes, both semirigid as well as digital fibreoptic scopes. Saline TURP is also available for treatment of benign prostate enlargement with availability of AUTOCON 3 and Olympus TURIS.
Uro-oncology and Robotic Surgery
All forms of urological malignancies are treated like kidney cancer, prostate, bladder, testicular and penile cancers. At Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, we have the Da Vinci Surgical Robot which enables performance of complex oncologic surgeries with high precision and excellent patient outcomes. The commonly performed robotic surgeries by Uro department are robotic radical prostatectomy, robotic partial and radical nephrectomy, robotic radical cystectomy with urinary diversion etc. Apart from uro oncology cases, many reconstructive urology procedures like robotic pyeloplasty, robotic ureteric reimplantation, sacrocolpopexy and vesicovaginal repair can also be done.
Uroflowmetry, Urodynamics, Bladder Rehab clinic
Uroflowmetry and Urodynamics helps in assessment of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms, bladder pressures and flow rate. It is also useful in patients with neurogenic bladder. To deal with patients with complex bladder issues like over active bladder, urinary incontinence a comprehensive bladder rehab clinic has been started with patients undergo comprehensive evaluation and treatment ranging from pelvic floor physiotherapy and medications to sacral neuromodulation (bladder pacemaker)
TRUS biopsy
Transrectal ultrasound guided biopsy is an OPD procedure in patients with suspected prostate cancer. Close to 200 prostate biopsies are performed in Uro OPD every year.
Pediatric Urology
All congenital and acquired pediatric genitourinary issues are treated like hypospadias, posterior urethral valves, undescended testes, pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction, vesicoureteral reflux, dysfunctional voiding, bed wetting, etc.
Female Urology
All uro-gynaecological conditions are treated ranging from urinary leak issues, urinary tract infections, cystocele, vault prolapse, stress urinary incontinence, vesicovaginal fistulae etc
Andrology and Male Infertility
Erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation are common sexual problems faced by men. Treatment of ED ranges from medications, intracavernosal injections to penile prosthesis. The department is also involved in treatment of male infertility and surgical sperm retrieval for IVF. The operating microscope, Leica Pro, is utilized for microscopic varicocelectomy for treatment of varicocele and microscopic testicular sperm extraction (microTESE)
Reconstructive Urology
The department treats a large number of patients with urethral stricture disease. Treatment ranges from endourological procedures to buccal mucosal graft urethroplasty.
Other reconstructive procedures include augmentation cystoplasty, where segment of small bowel is used as a patch to increase the bladder capacity; bladder neck reconstruction; etc.
