Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBG) are the two surgical specialties dealing with the female reproductive organs.
Obstetrics is the surgical specialty dealing with the care of a woman and her offspring during pregnancy, childbirth
and the puerperium (the short period after birth).

  • The departmental objectives are to encourage medical graduates to practice the subject of Obstetrics and
Gynecology with sincerity, while adhering to ethical principles.
  • The department places emphasis not just on course curriculum but also on a humaneness that can redefine the
    doctor-patient relationship.
  • The training involves both theory and practicals. Students also learn the vital aspects of history-taking,
    examination, diagnosis and treatment.
  • As interns, they spend 2 months in this department that involves labour room postings for a week. Interns
can assist in procedures but under supervision.
  • The PG residents gain experience in the field by assisting in more complex procedures like C-sections and
    hysterectomies.
  • The postgraduate students are trained in all sub-specialties like maternal fetal medicine, Gynec-oncology,
infertility and urogynecology. They undergo training in obstetric ultrasound and in laparoscopy.
  • The Department of OBG at Ramaiah is one of the few centers in the state of Karnataka providing the service
of PPTC (Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission) of HIV-AIDS and VCTC (Voluntary Counseling and Testing
Center). The department has also been recognised as a training center.
  • In PPTC & VCTC, a skill lab has been set up for the purpose of examination and laparoscopy and to train
undergraduate students in handling normal deliveries.
  • Near-miss and mortality meetings are a highlight of the Department of Gynecology.
  • High-end infrastructure includes an ICU and a nursery. The presence of a blood bank ensures emergency cases
are treated in time and lives are saved.
  • The facilities also make space for infertility and laparoscopic surgeries.
