Central Library

The Ramaiah Medical College Library was started in the year 1979 in an old building Block of the Institute in a small room with a small collection of books and journals.

In the year 1990 it was shifted to new independent building of the Institute, and moved to its present premises in 2015. Every year it has been updated with the latest edition of books & journals to facilitate the learning requirements of the students and faculty. At present the central library is spread across 46,000 square feet and accommodates around 850 users at a time.

It has e- access enabled for students and faculty. The library is maintained well and regularly enriches its collection in order to allow users full access to current research tools and technologies The institution has over 23,054 books & 12,245 Bound volumes of journals and ambience to meet the needs for academic enrichment.

The library will provide electronic access to various full text articles and databases via static IP addresses. The central library is well equipped with modern facilities and resources in the form of CD-ROM, online e-journals and e-books, audio video cassettes, books, Bound volumes of journals, thesis etc.

The library collection also includes a large section of expensive reference books and collection of books for SC/ST students.

The central library has involved various digitization activities, like digitizing the thesis and old question papers for the purpose of the students use.

The entire books and non-book materials are bar coded and in-house functions like Cataloguing & Acquisition, Periodicals, OPAC, EPAC reports, and other modules are automated using the EASYLIB automation software.

About Central Library

Ramaiah medical college Library System comprises of a Central Library and about 38 departmental libraries collectively supporting the teaching, research and extension programs of the Institute. All in-house operations of the library are fully computerized using the Easylib Web Version 6.4A. library management software that also provides web-based access to the catalogue of the Central Library.

Central Library is well equipped with Medical Text/Reference Books, Databases, Periodicals, CDs, DVDs (Dissertations & Text Books), Bound volumes, National and International Journals. Theses and Dissertations. In library separate Digital library with 60 computers having dedicate high speed internet connection is made available. The library uses the National Library of Medicine Classification (NLM) for Medical Books & Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules2(AACR2) for stack arrangements. Resources could be searched using the library Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). The library has a team of qualified and well experienced staff to cater to the information needs of the users.

The library remains open on all the days of the year except on 16 holidays.

Membership for Lending Library Items

All the Staff & Postgraduate students of RMC are eligible for library membership. The eligible candidates are requested to collect library membership form from the central library and they have to fill the form get signed from HOD of the concerned Department, Professor In-charge of the library & PRINCIPAL. They have to submit the same to Central Library along with three similar passport size photographs. Membership also provided for Interns & SC/ST Students.

Borrowing Privileges and Overdue Fine

Only Registered Members can borrow books from the Central Library on production of their individual Borrower’s tickets issued by the library at the circulation desk. Each book issued to the user(s) must get proper gate pass which they have to surrender at the check-point to the security. The entitlement of number books on loan and loan period with overdue fine for different categories of members are as follows:

General Borrowing Rules

Loss of Identity Card/ Library Borrower’s tickets

The loss of Identity Card or Library Borrower’s tickets should be reported to the Institute Concerned Office and Circulation Counter of the Library. The Institute concerned section (UG/ PG) will issue duplicate Identity card. Contact Circulation Counter for Borrower’s tickets. Borrowers shall be responsible for any loss or misuse of their original/ duplicate card.

  • Library members can borrow books and bound volumes & periodicals for a stipulated period.
  • The library authorities have power to cancel the membership, who is infringing the rules of library.
  • Aprons, Bags, Plastic Covers, Snacks (Chewing Gum) and any personal belongings are not allowed inside the library.
  • Under no circumstances, the library authorities are responsible for transferred or misuse of library borrower’s tickets. Library items to borrow - Books / Bound Volume / Periodicals.
  • Books will be issued only on production of library borrower’s ticket.
  • Members can borrow Two books and Two journals at a time for one BT card for a maximum period of 07 or 15 days.
  • On no account, the books borrowed are transferable to any other members.
  • Theses, dissertations, CDs, video cassettes, etc…, are not lent out of the library.
  • Although the library circulation staff will observe any damage to the library item before lending it, all readers are requested to check the library item thoroughly for missing pages, chapters, pictures etc., or any damage before borrowing. Please note damaged items will not be lent out.
Cost Recovery of Books Lost by the Library Members
  • Library borrowed items (books/bound volume /periodicals) if returned in damaged condition will NOT be accepted from the reader. Mutilated or spoiled books will have to be replaced by the borrower / the borrower would have to pay the replacement cost of the book for its latest edition.
  • Members are requested to return the library items within due date to avoid fine & inconvenience to others.
Renewal of Books

If a loan book is not on demand, then the user concerned is allowed for renewal a maximum of two consecutive times. The renewal of books can be done through the library staff at the circulation counter. The library reserves the right to recall any book issued to the user at any point in time if need aeries.

Overdue notices and suspension of borrowing privileges Overdue Fines

If a loaned item is not returned by the end of the lending period, the library sends the reminders. Failure to return even after remainders the decision will be taken with concerned higher authorities.

Overdue Fines

If any Staff fail to return the book/journals Rs.1/- per item will be charged per day until the item is returned.

If any PG /Interns students fail to return book/journal with in due date, they will be charged Rs.5/- per day for first 15 days and after that Rs.10/- per day will be charged for one month. After one month it will be Rs.25/- per day for subsequent days

Loss of library borrowed items Claims

Loss of books / bound volume /periodicals must be reported immediately. Late fees, if any, will be charged till the loss of borrowed item is reported. If the original borrowed library item is returned after reporting it lost, the fine will be calculated till the date of its return.

Over 23,054 books and 12,245 Bound volumes of journals from across 235 countries.

  • Personal belongings including bag, laptop bag, briefcase, umbrella, files, folders, etc. should be deposited at the lockers provided at the library.
  • Users are required to leave apron, jacket, etc. at the locker.
  • Cash and other valuables should not be left in the lockers. The library accepts no responsibility for any loss.
  • Users must switch-off their mobile phone or turn it into silent mode.
  • Users must sign the entry register maintained at the Security check Point and enter ‘in’ and ‘out’ time.
  • Strict silence, discipline and decorum should be maintained in the library premises.
  • Dress code of the Institute must be maintained during Library visit.
  • Users should behave in a reasonable and seemly fashion in the library and should not cause disturbance to others.
  • Personal books are permitted in the reading area except in the Journal section and Stack. Books including diaries and note books are not permitted inside the Stack.
  • Reading halls are meant for individual study only. Engaging in discussion, conversation and group study is discouraged.
  • Users should not waste time in searching books and other materials the location of which they are not sure about. OPAC should be used to search bibliographic and location details of the materials. Library staff help also can be taken to trace the books and other materials which are not found easily.
  • Personal belongings should not be left on the reading tables unattended.
  • Reservation of seats by users either for themselves or for others by placing books or other articles on the reading tables and chairs are not encouraged.
  • Membership and borrower’s card are not transferable.
  • Loss of Library card should be reported immediately in writing to the Circulation Desk. In case of loss of a Library card, the member may request the Head of the Institution or Librarian in writing for the issue of a duplicate. A fine of Rs.100/- will be levied for the loss of a card. payments must be made at the Circulation Desk.
  • Users should check carefully the books for missing pages and other damages before checking out.
  • Books borrowed for reading in the library premises must be returned to the Circulation Desk after use.
  • Books must be handled with great care and protected from dust and rains. Damage to the books through mishandling, mutilating, underlining, scribbling and disfiguring must be avoided.
  • Care must be taken not to damage and disfigure furniture, equipment and the building.
  • Tables and chairs should not be disturbed from their position.
  • Users should not rest their feet on the chairs, tables and bookshelves.
  • Standing at the Library entrance, chatting and discussing disturbs readers, Carrying and consumption of eatables and beverages in the library premises is not allowed.
  • Playing music and sleeping in the library is prohibited.
  • Lights and fans should be switched-off when not needed.
  • Library cards must be returned to obtain ‘No dues’ from the library.
