OVERVIEW

The foundations that make for a great doctor are firmly rooted in basic science, clinical experience and in-depth research, and lie at the heart of curriculum implementation. The undergraduate MBBS and postgraduate courses follow the RGUHS and MCI guidelines.
Undergraduate
The faculty employ a wide array of progressive interactive learning formats. Traditional learning formats, such as in-class lectures, practical classes, seminars, small group exercises, continue to play an important role in student learning. Through the Medical Education Unit, faculty are trained and encouraged to implement new methods of blended learning, such as e-learning modules with student self-assessment and opportunities using standardised patients and simulators.
Three main concepts are incorporated throughout the undergraduate years:
- The scientific basis of medicine
- Focus on patient care
- Special emphasis on the unique skills essential for all doctors, such as communication, medical ethics, and professionalism)
Our Community Outreach Programme is organised at the cusp of the first and second year in order to expose students to learning beyond the classroom and exposes them to the issues faced by various populations in the community.
The students also have the opportunity to participate in individual short research projects under a guide.
Our students have taken the initiative to organise a scientific platform called “Insight”. Under this programme, various clinic pathological integrated sessions, simulation workshops, clinical skill sessions like resuscitation etc. are conducted with medical students from various colleges as attendees.
Learning aspects of hospital safety, waste management, safe medication communication are constantly applied. Postgraduates undergo special training in research methodologies and statistical analysis which facilitate them throughout their careers.
The Skill labs offer training through simulation and tissue dissection which emphasises their basic scientific basis.
We are involved in the education of superior physicians and specialists, and our college emphasises the basic scientific disciplines and ethical and professional concerns necessary to achieve this goal.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE

Emergency Medicine is a specialty that provides care for emergency patients by specially trained doctors who deliver a wide range of services. It includes initial assessment and early treatment in resuscitation, trauma, and medical and pediatric emergency including surgery and anesthesia.
- The emergency care team are fully backed by consultants for all specialties and super specialties round the clock. These consultants will attend to these patients within a time frame or transfer them to appropriate centers as required.
- The accident and trauma system has been fully integrated into this department and they strive to meet the needs of all injured or emergent patients requiring acute care facility, regardless of severity of injury or emergency, geographic location, or population density.
- The goal is to match a facility’s resources with a patient’s needs so that optimal and cost-effective care is achieved.
- This department trains their resident doctors (MBBS/MD) to establish care systems using a systematic approach that can provide “fast track” services for people with rapidly curable illness or injury, or organise transfer to higher centers in adequate time. This will ensure quicker treatment for patients, who otherwise have to wait for a long time or may not avail them in time at all.
- Resuscitation is the most important section of an emergency room. The department is responsible for the immediate treatment of medical or surgical emergencies, for initiating lifesaving procedures in emergency situations, and for providing emergency care for other conditions, including chronic problems and minor injuries and illnesses.
- They should also have a wide range of emergency care and patient monitoring equipment, as required for the said facility.
- MD residents are specifically trained to practice as independent emergency doctors/consultant from PHCs to District hospitals with common policies and procedure guidelines for provision of uniform emergency care.
- The curriculum includes administrative components such as Leadership, System development, Legislation and Finances as well as operational and clinical components such as injury prevention and control, pre-hospital care and definitive care facilities.

PLASTIC SURGERY

Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty concerned with the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. All plastic surgery is not necessarily cosmetic; and includes many types of reconstructive surgery, craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and the treatment of burns.
- At the UG level, students learn mostly through theory. Basic topics like burns and cleft lip palate are taught at this time.
- PG residents get the opportunity to assist in procedures and perform minor ones on their own.
- Practice-based learning is the key component of this programme. Residents are assessed daily on multiple grounds including approach, work in the emergency ward, quality of examination and how they prepare the patient for surgery.
- This rigor is matched by hands-on training, where residents get ample opportunity to work on surgical procedures for reconstruction, burns, trauma and congenital anomalies.
- Every senior resident is encouraged to present two papers at the National Conference organised by the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India.
- The department works closely with General Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Orthopedics, ENT, Ophthalmology and Dermatology. Combined cases arise along with the departments of General Medicine, Endocrinology, Neurosurgery, Accident and Emergency, Vascular Surgery and OBG.
